We are licensed to treat and manage various eye diseases.  Here is a list of a common eye diseases that we can work with you to manage: Glaucoma Glaucoma is an eye disease, in most cases painless, which causes progressive damage to the optic nerve (a complex nerve bundle which transmits visual impulses to the brain). It is often associated with elevated intraocular pressure. Left untreated, glaucoma can lead to permanent loss of sight including total blindness.  Because visual field loss usually begins in mid-periphery, the condition often goes undetected by patients until advanced damage has occurred.  The treatment of glaucoma is typically managed with pressure-lowering eye drops. In more advanced or resistant cases, surgery is sometimes necessary. During your comprehensive annual exam, we will perform various tests to detect glaucoma. Once diagnosed we can determine the best treatment plan for you to ensure you maintain your precious sight. Macular Degeneration Macular Degeneration is a disease that affects your central vision that is needed to read and drive.  In advanced cases, it can lead to serious vision loss.  Early detection of this sight-threatening disease can lead to the preservation of your vision. Cataracts A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s crystalline lens.  The lens is made mostly of water, and the protein inside the lens is arranged in a precise manner so as to keep the lens clear, and allow the maximum amount of light to enter the eye.  As we age, some of this protein begins to degenerate and loses its regular arrangement, thus leading to a loss of clarity of the lens.  This is a cataract, and over time, it may grow larger and denser, clouding more of your vision and making it harder for you to see.  Cataracts are usually diagnosed during routine eye exams, and management will depend on the severity of the cataract.  By evaluating your visual needs and the degree of cataract, we will determine your need for cataract surgery.

Contact lenses come in many types and styles.  Depending on your visual needs, the optimal contact lens for you may vary.  By performing several tests, we can determine which contact lens will benefit you the most.   Some specialty contact lens fittings that we are experienced in performing are the following: Contact Lenses for Astigmatism While there have been limitations in contact lens options for people with astigmatism in the past, new advances in technology have now mad<img src="../uploaded_images/business_images/0003/9825/Woman-Portrait-3.jpg" border="0" alt="Image" hspace="10" vspace="10" align="right" />e toric contact lenses common place.  Properly fitting a toric lens requires much time and patience, as well as a skillful doctor such as Dr. Carver.  During your exam, we will determine if fitting you into a toric contact lens is necessary, and identify the best lens design for you. Bifocal and Multifocal Contact Lenses Bifocal contact lenses are designed to give good vision to people who have a condition called presbyopia.  Presbyopia is a natural occurance with aging.  The main symptom that people notice is needing to hold reading material, like a menu or newspaper, further away to view it clearly.   Bifocal contact lenses are available in both soft and rigid gas permeable lenses.  There are many bifocal and multifocal contact lens designs.  We can help determine which design will be the best fit for you during our evaluation. Colored Contact Lenses If you want a subtle or dramatic change in your eye color, then colored contacts may be a great option for you!  Many of these contact lenses come with either no prescription, or with a prescription for near sightedness, far sightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia.  During your exam, we will determine which contact lens brand suits you the best, by evaluating your vision, comfort with the contact lenses, and assess the fit of the contact lenses. Post and Pre-operative Contact Lenses – Depending on the type of surgery that was done, standard contact lenses may or may not work with post-operative corneas (the clear front surface of your eye).  Make an appointment with us, and we will determine which contact lenses provide you with optimal comfort, fit, and vision.  Orthokeratology Lenses Imagine being able to correct your refractive error while you sleep!  Orthokeratology or Ortho-K is a technology that utilizes a special contact lens that gently reshapes your cornea while you sleep so that during the day time, you can take off the contact lenses and see clearly.  The great thing about Ortho-K is that the effects are reversible.  If you try reshaping your cornea, and decide that you want laser eye surgery, or return back to glasses or standard contact lenses, you can do that easily. If you are interested in this technology, we can determine if you are a good candidate for Ortho-K through your exam. Dry eye syndrome is one of the most common problems treated by optometrists.  Tears are comprised of three layers.  The mucus layer coats the cornea(the clear portion of your eye), forming a proper foundation for the tear film to stick to they eye.  The middle layer is the aqueous layer, which provides moisture and supplies oxygen and other nutrients to the eye.  The outer lipid layer is an oily film that prevents the tears from evaporating from the eye.   There are many causes of dry eyes. There are 3 types of refractive error, myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia(farsightedness), and astigmatism.  These conditions can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. </li> <li>Amblyopia - Amblyopia is poor development of central vision as a result of a turned eye or a large asymmetry in  refractive error.  If untreated, amblyopia can slow visual development of the affected eye, which can lead to permanent vision loss. </li> <li>Strabismus - Strabismus is an eye that turns inwards or outwards relative to the other eye.  If left untreated, a strabismus can lead to amblyopia, and decrease depth perception.</li> <li>Glaucoma - Glaucoma is the degeneration of the optic nerve (a nerve tract that connects the eye to the brain) often associated with high eye pressures.   During a comprehensive eye exam, we perform numerous tests that tell us whether or not you have glaucoma. Because there are virtually no symptoms, it is important to have regular eye exams to prevent permanent vision loss.</li> <li>Macular degeneration - Macular Degeneration is a disease that affects the small "sweet spot" of the retina critiical  for acute central vision tasks such as reading, driving, and watching television. <h4>Vision screenings performed by school nurses and pediatricians are helpful but not nearly as complete as a comprehensive eye exam performed by an optometrist.  Eye exams are extremely important for children in the detection of focusing difficulties, eye muscle teaming and coordination problems, vision perception abnormalities, and eye disease.  Many children having no apparent signs or symptoms present with at times very serious eye or vision conditions. By identifying your child’s problems early, greater success can be achieved with treatment.  If left untreated, some eye conditions and diseases may prevent normal visual development leaving permanent impairment.  According to the American Optometric Association, infants should have their first comprehensive eye exam by the age of six months. Annual routine exams should begin at age three to monitor for changes.  </h4> <h4>When scheduling an eye exam for your child, choose a time when he or she is usually alert and in a good mood.  Be sure to tell us if your child has a history of delayed motor development, frequent eye rubbing, squinting, or head tipping or turning, fails to maintain eye contact, cannot keep visual fixation on an object, or has poor eye tracking.  We will also want to know about previous ocular diagnoses.
